Since 1978, the Native Friendship Centre of Senneterre (CEAAS) has been developing and providing services and programs to Aboriginals in the Senneterre region: Crees, Algonquins and Atikamekw. Over the years, the Centre was able, through its determination and community commitment, to implement an authentic relation between Aboriginals and non Aboriginals in the area.

Clientele

The clientele is comprised of the Senneterre Aboriginal community, the Lac Simon Algonquin community, as well as the Cree communities of Waswanipi, Oujé-Bougoumou and Mistissini.

OVERVIEW OF PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

The Native Friendship Centre of Senneterre offers lodging and health liaison services, educational support and preschool activities for children aged 0 to 5, information and referral services, translation and interpretation services in Aboriginal languages, a soup kitchen, an interpretation centre, assistance services and a patient transportation service. Cultural awareness, addiction awareness, orientation, economic development and suicide prevention services are also offered. The Centre also ensures the representation of the Aboriginal community of Senneterre before various entities and tables.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

The Nottaway Migwam is a socio-cultural activity whose goal is to promote intercultural relations. Cultural workshops are also offered in schools in order to disseminate information on the Aboriginal culture. The Retour aux sources is an activity which, through forest dwellings, camping or canoe expeditions, allows young Aboriginals to gain a better knowledge of their ancestral culture.
