The Native Friendship Centre Movement of Québec

The Native Friendship Centre Movement exists in Canada since 1950. There are 120 Native Friendship Centres in the country. In Québec, the Movement exists since 1969 and there are 10 Native Friendship Centres. The mission of the Native Friendship Centres across Canada is to improve the quality of life of urban Aboriginals, promote the culture and build bridges between peoples.

The Native Friendship Centres are urban service facilities for Aboriginals. They act as major learning and training organizations for thousands of urban Aboriginals and provide sustainable and quality employment to over 160 persons in Québec, mostly Aboriginals, and benefit from the valuable work of approximately one hundred volunteers every year.

Since their creation, Native Friendship Centres have served as incubators for major initiatives that have led to the implementation of several programs and services for Aboriginals in urban settings, in areas such as health and social services, education, employment, and social, community and economic development.

Native Friendship Centres offer a continuum of over 70 services, from early childhood to elders, youth and adulthood. The everyday work of the Native Friendship Centre members allows for the undertaking of actions characterized by cost-efficiency and positive impacts on the improvement of the quality of life of urban Aboriginal citizens, their financial autonomy and their social inclusion.

Indeed, Native Friendship Centres foster the development of a better understanding of the issues, challenges and problems of urban Aboriginals, not only with non aboriginals citizens of Québec, but also with our Aboriginal fellow citizens living on reserve.

In Quebec, there are 9 Native Friendship Centres implanted in the cities of Chibougamau, Val-d’Or, La Tuque, Montreal, Senneterre, Quebec City, Joliette, Sept-Îles, Saguenay and Trois-Rivières, with the latter being a Centre under development.
